Thomas Edward
Spann
Jul 24, 1968 — Mar 6, 2023
"The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
THE BREATH OF THE ALMIGHTY…
Thomas Edward Spann, Sr. was born July 24, 1968, in Jackson, Mississippi. A vibrant kid, coupled with a lovable personality, Thomas, or "Woosie" as he was affectionately known, quickly became the family's favorite. He was a graduate of Provine High School, and after completing high school studies, Thomas set his aim toward a higher education. Thomas found himself on the campus of Jackson State University as a freshman, ready to embark on an experience of a lifetime. While at Jackson State, he received a Bachelors of Science in Accounting and was initiated into the Delta Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 1990. Thomas's time at Jackson State proved to be one full of lasting memories and an educational experience that would allow him to thrive professionally.
Thomas began his professional career with the Mississippi State Department of Education as an Account Auditor. This
career path would ultimately meet Thomas with much success, as he led several well-known corporations in the capacity of executive accounting. He would end his service in executive accounting at Concord Church Dallas as their Executive Director of Finance. Thomas was an intelligent, professional, and honorable man. He loved people and strived to live a life that was pleasing to God.
…GIVES ME LIFE
May 28, 1994, Thomas joined Vanessa Tate given by her father, Clarence Rogers, in Holy Matrimony, in Jackson,
Mississippi. The two loved each other dearly and committed themselves to honor their union as they honored Christ, and they did so for 28 years. Thomas was not only a committed husband, he was a committed father. His love for his children often exceeded comprehension. Thomas enjoyed being a father. He always wanted what was best for his children. Thomas firmly believed that if he trained his children in "the narrow way," when they grew old, they would not depart from it. Knowing the strength and power that is found in strong family ties, Thomas encouraged his family to always love and support each other.
"Then Job answered the Lord and said: I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted"
Thomas was such an outgoing, jovial, and fun-loving man. He had a way of engaging with people that made you feel like you have known him all your life. It has been stated that, "The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort and convenience but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges." Thomas's fight against cancer indeed proved his truest measure. Each day brought about its own challenges, yet Thomas chose to remain steadfast in his faith.
From special moments with his family and friends, to attending sporting events, spade games, and socializing with his
fraternity brothers, Thomas lived a life that echoes the sentiment, God does all things well.
Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Maggie B. Spann; his grandparents, J.C.Spann, Sr. and Lillie Mae Allen Spann; a son, Tevin Vance Spann; and a brother, Martinez Wade.
The light and legacy of his life will forever be cherished by his loving and devoted wife, Vanessa Tate Spann; four children, Jeremy Odom, Thomas E. Spann, II, Toryn J. Spann, and Trace A.
