Obituary

Robert Edgar 'Bobby' Govan, 78, transitioned from this world on April 14, 2022, surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren.  He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and a friend.  Bobby was born March 24, 1944, to Leonese "Ms. Nene" (Murray) Govan and Barney Edgar Govan in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

Bobby attended several Catholic schools before graduating from St. Rose de Lima High School in Bay St. Louis, MS, in 1964.  Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Air Force.  During his tour of service, Bobby was stationed in Spokane, WA, Japan, and Taiwan and served in the Relief Fuel Unit during the Vietnam War in 1969.

Near the end of his last tour in Spokane, Bobby began attending Eastern Washington University. He left the service early as a Sergeant with an Honorable Discharge and left college as part of a special program in 1973 to teach.  He taught General Math at Sacajawea Middle School in 1973 and Lewis and Clark High School in 1974.

Bobby returned to the Pass in 1978 and began working at the Dupont Plant in Delisle, MS in 1980 until his retirement.  After retirement he could not sit still for long and began working with his friend WC as a home inspector for the Community Action Agency. He spent his retirement days playing the games he loved such as Dominoes, Pinochle, Poker, and Golf and providing love and support for his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Leonese Govan, and a beloved grandson, Yahsen Daniel Campbell, and daughter-in-law Veronica Stokes.

Bobby is survived by a brother, Barney (Mary) Govan, Jr., his daughters, Leonese (Eric) Spann, Antoinette (Rodney) Govan, Angela (Steven) Benton, of Kennesaw, GA and Monique Smith of Raleigh-Durham, NC; stepdaughter Terry Davis of Gulfport, MS, and stepsons Schontaine (Keri) Stokes, of Fremont, CA, and Rodney (Jean) Evans of Winchester, VA. He also leaves behind a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews and nieces as well as dear cousins, Mattie Bradley, of Gulfport, MS, and Gilbert Whavers, of Duncanville, TX. He is also survived by devoted loving friends that include Tangela (Tan) Fairley, Darlene Paschal, Neville (Tiger) Johnson III, Dierdre (Dee) Marshall, W.C. Johnson, and Ausby E. John.

Bobby was known to many across the Mississippi Gulf Coast, especially in his mother's home of Pass Christian and his father's home of Bay St. Louis.  His quick wit and talent for storytelling will leave his loved ones with many memories to cherish.

He remains forever in the hearts and minds of many and will be mourned and missed by family and friends who will carry his memory with them as they continue their journey in this life.
