Gulfport
Patricia Ann Horne Nixon, affectionately known as "Trish," was born on September 26, 1942 in Gulfport, Mississippi to the late Lula and Arthur Horne Sr. Patricia completed her earthly journey on December 28, 2019.
Growing up in Gulfport, Patricia attended Soria City Elementary School, and graduated from Thirty-Third Avenue High School in 1960. Then, she attended Alcorn College, an historically black college, in Lorman, Mississippi. Patricia graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education, with a minor in Science, in 1964. Later, she completed graduate studies at Howard University and D.C. Teacher's College in Washington, D.C.
Patricia was a quiet and studious child. It was her love for reading and children that led her to the field of education. Thus, Patricia followed her heart and became a teacher. Patricia began her teaching career with Bay St. Louis, MS Public Schools in 1964.
A few years later, Patricia met the love of her life the late James C. Nixon of Cincinnati, Ohio. Patricia and James, who she lovingly called Nick, married on June 25, 1968.
After relocating to Cincinnati, Patricia began teaching health and physical education in Cincinnati Public High Schools. Eventually, Patricia and James moved to Washington, D.C. During this time, Patricia was hired as a health and physical education teacher by D.C. Public Schools. She taught for many years and developed lifelong friendships at Frank W. Ballou Senior High School and Charles Hart Middle School. Patricia remained with D.C. Public Schools until she moved to Pennsylvania.
In the early 1980s, Patricia and her husband became franchise owners of a McDonald's restaurant in Amber, Pennsylvania. For the next three years, Patricia and James resided in Philadelphia.
Once Patricia and James decided to sell their McDonald's restaurant in Pennsylvania, they returned to Washington, D.C. At this time, Patricia was hired as a reading specialist at Potomac Job Corps in Washington, D.C. She remained on staff at Potomac Job Corps until her retirement in 1999.
During her retirement, Patricia attended worship service and participated in various activities at the Second Church of God, located at 1530 New Jersey Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C. She derived immense joy from supporting numerous ministries, fundraising activities and special events hosted by the Second Church of God. However, Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church, Patricia's home church, held a very special place in heart.
Throughout her life, Patricia invested her time and financial resources to support various charitable organizations that embodied precepts, beliefs and values that she cherished.
Her memories will forever be cherished by her loving sister, Jeanette Horne Hardy of Gulfport; and brother, Robert Earl Peters Sr., also known as Kenny Charles, (Elizabeth) of Oakland, California.
