Obituary

The totality of our life is not marked by what we've accomplished, nor is it marked by the value of our assets, yet it is marked by what we've done and how we've treated the least of them. Ms. Lula Harper was born May 12, 1927, to Mr. William Greenwood and Ms. Katie May Robinson, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast at a young age and remained until she entered sweet rest. Ms. Harper departed this life, Saturday, February 5, 2022.

Ms. Harper was educated in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Birmingham High School class of 1945. After moving to the Coast, Ms. Harper joined in Holy matrimony with Mr. Johnny Frank "Hamp" Harper in 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Harper's marriage proved to be a beautiful one and to their marriage six children were born. Ms. Harper united with the Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist, Gulfport.  In the light and likeness of any virtuous woman, Ms. Harper labored diligently as she maintained three jobs. She served in the Dietary Department at 33 rd Avenue High School, private cleaning for the Stevenson, and the Alamo Plaza Hotel and Resort, in Gulfport where she retired after 36 years of service.

It is said that one of the most powerful gifts given to a woman, by God is the gift of nurturing. Ms. Harper was a very loving and caring lady. Her love for her community was unmatched. Her children remember coming into the house during the summer and there would be kids everywhere being fed by Ms. Harper. She was known as the community's mother. Her children also remember there being nothing that Ms. Harper would not do for them. If it meant getting a third job to make ends meet, that's what she did. The earthly departure of a loved one is very seldom easy, but the Harper family rejoices for the love, life, light, and legacy that their mother left behind.

May the life I live speak for me.
May the life (I live) speak for me.
When I'm resting in my grave,
There's nothing more to be said;
May the life I live
Let it speak for me.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three children, Madison Earl Harper, Fredrick Douglas Harper, Johnnie Martin Harper; two stepsons, Johnnie Ray Harper, and Nolan Randolph Harper; two sisters, Mary Robinson and Zola Robinson; and two grandchildren, Adrian T. Robinson and Joshua Martin.

Ms. Harper is survived by three children, Rennetta "Net" Robinson, Dwight "Buck Eye" Harper (Joann), and Felicia R. Brown- all of Gulfport, Mississippi; seven step-children, Dr. Oswago Harper (Tamara), Cassandra Walton, Tammy Briggs, Tracey Harper- all of Gulfport, Mississippi, Gwen Williams- LaPlace, Louisiana, Erica (Arthur) Woods- Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Alicia Netterville- Jackson, Mississippi; 17 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and a host of great-great grandchildren.
