Obituary

Mrs. Luevell Harper, 88, was born June 25, 1933, to Mr. Coney Durr and Mrs. Mollie Durr in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi. She was a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast for over 60 years. On December 27, 2021, God whispered softly to his faithful servant, and she took her final rest.

Reared in the Baptist faith, as a member of New Palestine Baptist Church, Picayune, Mississippi, Mrs. Harper, or Mother Harper as she was commonly known established a personal relationship with Christ at a young age. In the years that followed, Mother Harper began to perfect her gift of music, singing, teaching, and playing the piano, especially to the youth. After moving to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, she continued to submit herself to the work and ministry of the Lord joining in Christian fellowship with the Greater Love Fellowship Baptist Church under the leadership of her husband, Reverend William Harper.

Mother Harper was a lady after God's own heart. She was a servant who saw great potential in many young people and she did all that she could to ensure that they maximized their potential both physically and spiritually. A great deal of this was done through the power of music. She loved children; she loved rearing and teaching children how to walk in the light of the Lord. This was done in churches that she played for and within her own childcare business as owner and operator of Harper's Day Care. Her musical career was extensive as she served as a music director, a gospel soloist, a gospel singer with both the Progressive Travelers and the Humble Brothers and Sisters, and a member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. In addition to her music ministry she was a Music Teacher. Mother Harper was also a local, state, and national missionary. Loving, caring, nurturing, and most importantly a child of God, Mother Harper has touched the lives of so many along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and beyond. Though her earthly tabernacle has been dissolved, we remain confident that she now has a building of God not made by the hands of man.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first spouse, Mr. Obbie Davis; five brothers, Coleman, James, Talmage, Charles, and Curtis Durr; two sisters, Dorothy Loving and Elizabeth Crawford; and one stepchild.

Mother Harper is survived by her spouse, Rev. William Harper; four sons, Pastor Obbie Wendell (Dora) Davis- Huntsville, AL, Pastor Freddie L (Rose) Davis- Gulfport, MS, Pastor Bruce (Sabrina) Davis, Sr. Newburgh, NY, and Curtis Ray Davis, Sr-Gulfport, MS; one daughter, Minister Rachel Davis, Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Richardson, TX; two sisters, Helen Smith- Gulfport, MS, Dorris Durr- Gulfport, MS, and Mary Nell Silverburg- Vallejo, CA; 37 grandchildren, a host of great and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
