Louis John
Hall
Jun 4, 1950 — May 30, 2024
Dr. Louis John Hall was born June 4, 1950 to Simuel and Armentha Hall in Pass Christian, MS. As the middle child of seven, he was blessed to have a strong village of sisters and brothers that loved and cared for him. He spent his early years enjoying intellectually stimulating activities, playing basketball, playing the trombone, and hanging out with his friends and family. At an early age, he dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized at First Missionary Baptist Church in Pass Christian, MS. This outward expression of his belief in God and the commitment of his parents to raise their children in the word, established his foundation and life-long dedication as a believer and a teacher.
His parents were also committed to the education of their children and ensuring that their descendants were afforded opportunities that were not available to them during that time. Louis received his early education in Pass Christian, graduating from Randolph High School in 1968. He then obtained a B.S. in Biology from Jackson State University. While in college, he remained focused on his studies and participated in numerous organizations and activities. As a member of the Sonic Boom of the South, he played the trombone and eventually served as the section leader. A witty professor and apparent matchmaker saw fit to partner Louis with a smart, sharp, and kindhearted biology major, Patricia Hood. Initially, she was not swayed by his charm, but he was persistent. It did not take long for the two to recognize the love they had for each other. After graduation in May 1972, the couple was married at Miller Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, MS, on June 24, 1972. During the early years, he worked at DuPont de Nemours, Inc., in Wilmington, DE, and then Pass Christian, MS, for several decades until he retired.
Education remained a continued focus for Louis, not only for himself, but also others. He received a M.S. and Ph.D. from Jackson State University in Environmental Science, as well as, a Specialist Degree in Education Administration from The University of Southern Mississippi.
He taught Physical Science at Long Beach Middle School and taught six years at Pass Christian High School before moving to higher education. For 14 years Louis taught at Mississippi Valley State University located in Itta Bena, MS, before retiring in 2016 as Chairman of the Dept. of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health. While at MVSU, he also served as the advisor for their Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Bowl team. Dr. Hall also did contract work for the National Science Foundation. Throughout his career in education, he mentored many students and helped them reach their goals and dreams with sound advice, unwavering support and genuine love.
When Louis joined an organization or committed to a cause he served with excellence, integrity and dedication. His Masonic affiliation was a stellar example of his role as a servant leader and mentor. At the time of his death, he was serving as the Grand Secretary and Grand Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Correspondence (CCFC) for the M. W. Stringer Grand Lodge, F. & A. M., Prince Hall Affiliation, and has served for 33 years. During his membership he also served as the Past Worshipful Master of Mexican Gulf Lodge No. 64, Pass Christian, MS; Past Worshipful Master of Leflore Lodge No. 342, Greenwood, MS; a 33rd Degree member of the United Supreme Council, Ancient; Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Southern Jurisdiction; a member of King Solomon Consistory No. 42, Pass Christian, MS; Past Region 4 Director, Grand United Order of Odd Fellows; and Past State Director of the Order of the Knights of Pythagoras, a youth mentoring program.
The welfare of his local community was essential to Louis. He understood the significance of developing the city of Pass Christian and ensuring that its citizens had the resources necessary to thrive. Louis served on the Pass Christian Civil Service Commission, Troop leader for a Boy Scout Troop, and as President of the Pass Christian Progressive Civic League. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church Pass Christian for over 60 years serving in various capacities to include Chairman of the Deacon Board and Superintendent of the Sunday School. He also served as President of the Gulf Coast Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress. Louis was also a member of the Gulfport Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and a life member.
