Obituary

Leon A. Miller, a devoted educator, proud veteran, and lifelong resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, at the age of 83.

Born on September 19, 1941, Leon was the beloved son of the late Arthur Clifton Miller and Harriet Miller. He was nurtured in the faith community of First Missionary Baptist Church of Biloxi and later became a faithful member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where he continued to grow spiritually and serve with devotion.

Leon graduated from Nichols Colored High School in Biloxi in 1958. He went on to attend Coahoma Community College and later earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rust College in 1962. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served honorably during the Vietnam era. Among his treasured memories was playing football while stationed in Germany, a pastime that brought him great pride.

After completing his military service, Leon embarked on a lifelong career in education. He dedicated 36 years to the Harrison County School District, serving at North Gulfport High School and later at D'Iberville High School. He played a vital role during a pivotal era in Mississippi history, witnessing and supporting the integration of D'Iberville High in 1972. Leon was known for his sharp mind, sense of humor, and tireless work ethic—qualities that left an enduring impact on generations of students, faculty, and the broader community.

Leon found joy in reading, cheering on football games, and most of all, spending time with his family. His humor, wisdom, and warmth brought life to every room, and he was never happier than when surrounded by his granddaughters who affectionately called him Paw Paw.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yvonne S. Miller; his children, Thomas L. Hope Jr. and Leon A. Miller Jr.; his sister, Dorothy Vereen; and his brothers, Robert Miller and Leo Miller.

Leon leaves behind a loving legacy in his daughters, Ursula (Ted) Anderson and Erica (Horace) Waites; daughter-in-law Maria Olga Miller, his adored grandchildren, Bria, Ebony, Bianca, Haley, Yvonne, and Averie; and two precious great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Isadore Miller and Earl (Pauline) Miller; his sisters-in-law, Irene Arrington, Barbara Miller, Cathey Miller, Lavon Trotter, Annetta Faison and Ann Faison; brother in laws Madison (Mary) Magee, Jr., Robert Moore, Jack Faison, and Edward Faison and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, God children and friends who will cherish his memory.

Leon A. Miller will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering commitment to family and service. His legacy lives on in every student he taught, every life he touched, and every story shared in his honor.
