Jonathan B
Pace
Jan 17, 1942 — Dec 31, 2024
In the waning hours of 2024, Jonathan Benjamin Pace, Sr. peacefully transitioned from this earthly life to rest in the loving arms of Jesus.
On January 17, 1942, he was born in Prentiss, MS to Benjamin Pace and Lecian Rogers Pace. He was the seventh child of eight children born into the family. In the Mt. Zion community, where Jonathan was reared, everybody knew everybody and if your neighbor wasn't your cousin, he was a cousin of a cousin. He was deeply influenced by the many caring individuals in the community, which consisted of small independent farming families. At an early age, he was baptized at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Prentiss.
Jonathan was a graduate of J.E. Johnson High School (Prentiss, MS). He attended Alcorn A&M College and later received an Associates Degree from Prentiss Institute. He was a distinguished U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and a Purple Heart Award Recipient.
In 1966 he wed his beloved wife, Patricia Lockhart. After relocating to Gulfport, MS, he united with the Morning Star Baptist Church. Throughout his life Jonathan was an integral part of the church ministry, serving in numerous capacities, which include Board of Deacons since 1982, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Assistant Superintendent of the General Sunday School, and General Superintendent of the Adult Sunday School.
For more than 28 years he was employed as a driver by the United Parcel Service (UPS). He was immensely dedicated to his work and was blessed to be employed in a profession that he loved. His outgoing personality endeared him to many of the customers on his route, leading to several lasting friendships.
Jonathan was known for his Christian character, kind and loving spirit, humorous personality and warm generosity. He enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, cooking, reading, restoring antique cars and gardening. If he had a motto, it would have been: "If it's broke, I can fix it!" Gardening was his favorite pastime. His gardens were legendary! Yes, it's true what they say, "You can take a man out of the country, but you can't take the ..." ("Country" was even a nickname given to him by a dear friend.) Although gardening was his hobby, his true passion was giving to others and sharing his bounty. Is there anyone who didn't receive a mess of collard greens from him?
There are so many hilarious stories we could share about Jonathan that highlight his character, boundless humor and ability to brighten even the darkest days. If you knew him, you know how he could fill a room full of laughter. If you didn't know him, anyone can tell you that his legacy goes beyond his humor. His love for his family and his church was shown through his actions. He will be remembered for his willingness to aid others and lend a helping hand, no matter the task.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia; infant daughters, Juanita and Karen; his parents and siblings.
Those who remain to live out his legacy of love and devotion are, two daughters, Kimberly Pace, Terri (Sean) Barna and one son, Jonathan (Anissa) Pace, Jr. His hope in the future lies with his grandchildren, Justin (Karla) Barna, Brandon Barna, Kennedy Pace, Jonathan Pace III, Jasen Pace and Jacob Pace. Also left to mourn his passing are, two great-grandchildren, Luka Barna and Mila Barna, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
