Joe
Causey
Aug 30, 1953 — Nov 23, 2023
Joe Causey, of Gonzales, LA was the second of seven siblings born to the late Eloise Causey, on August 30, 1953, in Mound Bayou, MS. Though rooted in Hollandale, MS, the family relocated to Vicksburg, MS where he spent most of his childhood.
Joe was born two months prematurely in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, where at birth his survival was in serious doubt from day one. Joe not only survived but thrived, and became a good steward, who started with less but produced much. His North Star was to endeavor and persevere and that he did.
At the age of 14, upon the untimely death of his beloved mother, Joe started working to support himself and to help his grandfather, Mr. Dewitt Causey Sr, and his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Causey, to care for his five younger sisters.
Joe loved school but attended irregularly because he worked to support himself. Intellectually gifted, he still graduated in the top tier of his class while attending Rose A. Temple High School, now known as Vicksburg High School, Vicksburg, MS in 1972. He later applied and was selected to attend Mississippi State University's prestigious School of Civil Engineering at Starkville, MS.
While matriculating at MSU, he met and married Linda Miller, and two children, Zuanarda "Z" and Carla Causey, were born into this union. As a Mississippi State co-op student for the Corps of Engineers, he received several job opportunities.
In 1979, he earned a highly coveted Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, the first of few African Americans to do so from Mississippi State University and accepted a position with Bellsouth Telecommunications on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Although he spent most of his career in Gulfport while raising his children, he continued to value education and passed along those values to both of his children. His son joined him as a fellow Mississippi State University Alumnus and his daughter would also graduate from the same institution as his sister, Diana Johnson, Tougaloo College. Both children concluded their academic journeys with master's degrees.
Eventually, Hurricane Katrina forced him to relocate to Gonzales, LA in 2005. In 2015, he retired from service after working for BE&K, a global engineering and construction company that received outsourced telecommunication company contracts. Upon his retirement, he focused on his family and remained an enormously proud grandfather, father, brother, uncle, cousin, godfather, mentor, and engineer.
As proclaimed in Psalm 90:10: "The length of our days is seventy years-or eighty, if we have the strength." Shortly after his 70th birthday, on Thursday, November 23, 2023 (Thanksgiving), Joe Causey transitioned to eternal rest. With the many relationships established throughout his lifetime, he truly is missed but will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, intellect, huge "Causey" smile, and delicious "Joe Causey" gumbo. He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, sister, Diana Johnson, and grandson, Zuanarda Causey Jr.
He is survived by his children, Zuanarda "Z" (Jaquatta) Causey and Carla Causey; his grandchildren, Jordan (Kaylani) Causey, Zavien Causey, Aajane Causey-Kincaid, Jaiden Causey, Joseph Causey, Donovan Causey-Joe, and Zoe Causey; his siblings, Tommie Lee (Marjorie) Causey, Katherine Bell, Gloria Pettis, Eloise Warren, and Mary (Ricky) Gaither; a loving aunt, Mildred Causey; bonus children, Amber Hamilton and Tomith "T" Hamilton; bonus grandchildren, Amarii Hamilton, Gemire Allen, Javian Hamilton, and Laiton Allen; goddaughters, Pamela Dampeer and Elena Brimage; a godson, Jamel Lane; a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
