Jackie A.
Avery, Sr.
Jan 21, 1938 — Dec 23, 2024
The world has lost a remarkable soul with the passing of Jackie Alton Avery, Sr., an acclaimed songwriter, producer, musician, and devoted family man. Jackie passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate in the hearts of music lovers and those who knew him personally.
Born on January 21, 1937, Jackie Avery's life was a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and passion. As a songwriter, his talent shaped some of the most memorable tracks of the 60s and 70s, earning him an indelible place in the history of soul, R&B, and blues. His works, including the soulful "Aunt Dora's Love Soul Shack" for Arthur Conley and "Make Sure (You Have Someone Who Loves You)" for the Dells, displayed his ability to channel emotion and life experiences into music.
Jackie's contributions didn't stop there. In the 70s, he penned classics like "Sweeter As The Days Go By" for the Dells, the powerhouse hit "Shackin' Up" for Barbara Mason, and worked on the Disco 9000 album for Johnnie Taylor. His time in Macon, Georgia, was particularly fruitful, as he collaborated with Phil Walden and others to produce masterpieces like Oscar Toney Jr.'s "I Wouldn't Be A Poor Boy" and Johnnie Jenkins' "Blind Bats and Swamp Rats."
Jackie's influence extended beyond songwriting. He played piano on Eddie Kirkland's The Devil and Other Blues Demons album, contributed to the production of Charlie Whitehead's Raw Spitt LP, and showcased his unique sense of humor with the "Jackie Avery Tongue and Cheek Choir." His talents as a vocalist shone through in his own releases, including the soulful single "Understanding" and the anthemic "Your Love Has Brought Me A Mighty Long Way."
Jackie Avery's life was a symphony of artistry, and resilience. Jackie's love for music was matched only by his love for family. Though he has passed, his legacy will live on through the music he created and the lives he touched.
He is preceded in death by his love, Ella Brown Avery; his son, Jackie Alton "Pete" Avery, Jr; his Father and Mother, John C. Avery and Mary Ellen Avery, brothers; John C. Avery, Jr., James C. Avery, Roland Avery, sisters; Geraldine Thofield, Barbara Ann Bailey, Gwendolyn E. Lizana, and Linda Lee Morgan. He is survived by his brother, Ronald Avery (Reinhild), and a host of Nieces, Nephews and friends.
A celebration of Jackie's extraordinary life will be held January 4, 2025, at Lockett Williams, 2018 31st Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39501 with repast to follow. Jackie Alton Avery, Sr. will forever be remembered as a trailblazer, a storyteller, and a true legend whose music brought light to the world.
