In Loving Memory of Ella Jean Butler
Sunrise: April 13, 1954 – Sunset: April 9, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ella Jean Butler, who transitioned at the age of 71. Ella was a strong, funny woman who loved the Lord. Her presence could light up any room, and her joy was felt by everyone around her. Her love language was cooking, and she found happiness in feeding others and being surrounded by her family. Her home in the Turnkey neighborhood of Gulfport was always open—filled with laughter, love, and a warm welcome to anyone who walked through her door. She had a genuinely good heart, and many of our friends grew up loving her just like family.
Ella was a faithful member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Biloxi, Mississippi, where she served in the Ministers' Wives Ministry, Deaconess Ministry, Widow Ministry, and was a dedicated member of the Chancel Choir. Her love for God was evident in the way she lived and served others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Johnny Ray Watts; her husband, Alsee Butler; her mother, Ellen Penzola Barnes; her sister, Ellen Louise Theodore; and her brother, James Taylor Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters: Joy Marie Watts (Carr), Tonya Kaye Watts, and Toshja Faye Watts (Shavers); son-in-law, Laurence Russell Shavers; and her loving family.
She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Deysha Yvonne Dedeaux, Devin Malik Williams, Keaira Jadae' Carr (Young), Marcus Young, and Evan Keyon Reese, along with her precious great-grandchild, Kaivin Rae Larkin.
She is also survived by her sisters, Erma Ward; brother-in-law, Michael Ward; Bobbie Jean Brooks and brother, Overseer Charles Taylor; sister-in-law Janice Taylor, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Her legacy of strength, laughter, love, and faith will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
The family asks that you keep us lifted in prayer during this time as we celebrate a life well lived.
"Well done, thy good and faithful servant."
