Obituary

A life well-lived is one that seeks justice, loves kindness and walks humbly with God. Cleotha "C.L." Luckett's well-lived life began in Canton, Mississippi when he was born on October 17, 1945, into the family of Cleotha "Mose" Luckett, Sr. and Emma Lee Luckett. He was the middle child, and was welcomed by his older sister, Carolyn. Later, his brother Charles was born. They both preceded him in death.

All that C.L. was and would later become is because of the values, instilled by his loving parents. These values, which became his life goals, included the importance of education, hard work, helping others and faith in God. He was deeply influenced by many caring individuals in his community. At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Canton.

In 1964, he graduated from Rogers High School, where he was a member of the drumline. That fall he enrolled at Alcorn State University (then known as Alcorn A & M College) where he met Connie Anderson of Gulfport. The two married on December 26, 1968, and were blessed with three daughters, the lights of their lives, Charri, Cheryl and Chaundra.

C.L. was a proud American and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1968-1971. After completing his military service, he returned to Alcorn where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He continued his educational journey years later, obtaining a Master of Science degree in Education Administration from William Carey College.

He began his career as a teacher at Velma Jackson School in Camden, MS. After relocating to Gulfport, he began working as a teacher at North Gulfport Junior High School. He was an excellent, multi-talented teacher who touched the lives of many students in so many ways. After years of success in the classroom, he took his skills to the basketball court where he coached girls' basketball and led the team to many championships. Later in life, he would describe this period as one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of his storied career.  Many of the players would go on to have lasting relationships with C.L. that continued until his death.

He then moved on to administrative roles in Harrison County Schools, Biloxi Public Schools and Gulfport Schools.

In December 2001, C.L. retired from education following a debilitating illness. After more than 30 years in education along the Gulf Coast, he inspired many, encouraged all and developed lasting friendships with most. During his illness, and hospitalization, he was cared for by many former students who expressed their gratitude to him for his support and guidance.

Throughout his lifetime, C.L. was incredibly strong in his faith and belief in God. In 1972, he united with Morning Star Baptist Church, where he served for decades in many ministries including the Male Choir, Board of Trustees, Board of Deacons and was a faithful member of Sunday School. He loved his church family, and they showed their loved for him throughout his illness as they petitioned the Lord on his behalf.

C.L. was active in many civic and professional organization and received numerous awards and accolades through the years. He was a longtime active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Iota Upsilon Chapter, where he was named Omega Man of the Year several times. A scholarship in his name is also presented each year to a local high school graduate.

When he was physically able, he enjoyed many activities including the following:

·         Giving Connie her own honey-do lists

·         Car shopping with Cheryl

·         Dropping off and picking up Chaundra from her various activities

·         Watching College Football & Saints games with Charri

·         Fishing with Prince or Mickey

·         Playing tennis with Bobby Joe

·         Weight training and telling jokes at the gym with Vinson and Jerry

·         Reminiscing about North Gulfport Girls Basketball with Cine, Lesha, Darlene, Robin, Red and many other former players

·         Attending Alcorn football games with Parker Cherry and John Parker

Whether you knew him as Cleotha, C.L., Coach Luckett, Luck, Cle, Uncle Cle, Frat, or baby brother (if you're from Canton), you knew him as a mentor and friend to many.

C.L. fought a courageous battle with his health during the last few years of his life. But he never lost hope. Even in his pain he was able to lift the spirit of others with his humor and quick wit, positive attitude and faith in God.

In addition to his wife and daughters, C.L. leaves to cherish his memory, his Goddaughters Taylor Victoria Williams and Nadia Campbell, Godson Christopher Anderson, sisters-in law Lovie Luckett of Canton, along with Kristi (Derrick) Anderson and brother-in-law Marcus Anderson of Germany, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, former students, fraternity brothers and friends.

Therefore, as we say so long to our dear friend and loved one, we pray that the remembrance of his life will forever bring warmth and encouragement to all who were blessed to have known him if only for a moment.

"I'll leave the light on for you."- C.L. Luckett
