Betty Jane

Dec 25, 1929 — Jun 2, 2023
Betty Jane (Fairconnetue) Lizana came into this world December 25, 1929 and left June 2, 2023, at the young age of 93. Preceded in death by her husband Andrew Lizana, her parents Marguerite (Spence) and Harry Fairconnetue; a younger sister Wanda, a brother George, a son Edward and daughter Danita (Lizana) Gresham. She leaves behind to treasure their memories of her, a sister Elyria Ursula Fairconnetue; sons Andre', Guy (Carla), Mark, Don (Andree), and daughters Terri, Michelle, Donna, Marie, and Marguerite (Courtney) Laureys, numerous grand-children, great grand-children, and nieces and nephews, and Maurice Simon who lived with the family
Miss Betty, as she was fondly known around town, was a long time parishioner of St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church. Graduating from St. Rose de Lima High School in May of 1947 she then went on to attend Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana for a short period of time. Returning to Bay Saint Louis, she married Andrew Lizana and they raised 11 children. During that time Betty worked at the Head Start Center and also at the local Catholic elementary schools as a teacher's assistant, eventually helping others acquire their GED. Many years later, her former students would stop and talk with her when they saw her around town - always stopping her to say hello with a loving hug.
After retiring from teaching, years later, Casino Magic opened. She applied for, and was accepted as a telephone operator. She always talked about how much fun she had with co-workers, and of the many interactions with the callers and casino customers. She retired for the last time in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina made its way through the Gulf Coast.
With time on her hands, she enjoyed keeping in touch with the many friends she made over the years and spending time with family.
She was recently awarded An Outstanding Mother of Hancock County award from The Hancock County Federation of Democratic Women. Although she was not well enough to attend the ceremony to accept the award, she was greatly appreciative of the acknowledgement.
