It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Areleous Morris Burton, affectionately known as "Morris," who left this world on April 1, 2025, at the age of 91. Morris was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose life was filled with love, service, and laughter. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Born on January 31, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, to Arthur H. Burton and Mattie Mae Jones, Morris was also raised by his beloved Grandmother May Espy and Step-Grandfather Ernest Espy. After graduating from Phillis Wheatley Senior High School in 1951, Morris briefly attended The Ohio State University before answering the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he would go on to serve with distinction for 22 years. After his military service, Morris continued to work as a Civilian Team Chief for an additional 10 years. His time in the Air Force took him to many corners of the globe, including Spain, Bermuda, Thailand, Greece, Turkey, Vietnam, and several U.S. stations, where he left a lasting impact.
In 1957, Morris married Wenona Bean "Jodie," who preceded him in death. Together, they had four children: Areleous Morris Burton Jr. (Diep), Allison Marie Burton (Romalice), Andrew Miles Burton, and Roberta Burton, who also preceded him in death.
In 1976, Morris married Joyce Irene Stubbs on December 18, and together they raised their two children, son Justin Morris Burton, and daughter DeVoyce Stubbs Gray. Morris was a loving and dedicated father to all his children, and his devotion to his family remained unwavering throughout his life.
A longtime member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Morris was an active participant in church life. He was a former Trustee and sang in the male choir, contributing both his voice and his faith to the congregation. His love for his community, family, and faith was always evident.
Outside of his service to others, Morris was known for his passion for the New Orleans Saints, proudly holding season tickets for over 40 years. His love for the game was matched only by his joy in fishing and traveling, which brought him great happiness and many cherished memories.
Morris is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Joyce Stubbs Burton; his children, Areleous Morris Burton Jr. (Diep), Allison Marie Burton (Romalice), Andrew Miles Burton, Justin Morris Burton, and DeVoyce Stubbs Gray; twelve cherished grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous extended family members, friends, and loved ones who will forever remember him for his warmth, generosity, and humor.
Morris leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and dedication to his family, his faith, and his country. His presence in the lives of those who knew him will be deeply missed. His love and laughter will live on in our hearts forever.
Rest in peace, Morris. You will always be in our hearts.
