Althea Young
Johnson
Feb 26, 1922 — Apr 15, 2022
Pass Christian
Althea Y. Johnson of Pass Christian, MS, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2022 at the age of 100 in Vancleave, MS. Althea was born on February 26, 1922 to the late Andrew Young and Eva Rose Young of New Orleans, Louisiana and the second of three children. They lived near the water plant at a time when the levee separated the city of New Orleans from Jefferson Parrish just "Uptown" and "Downtown".
Althea enjoyed reminiscing about life and times in New Orleans. She attended the Holy Ghost-Xavier Preparatory and graduated from Hoffman High School both in New Orleans. She had fond memories of working for different businesses located in the same block on Ferret street. She clerked at the local Co-Op grocery store when all items had to be weighted and packaged by hand. Althea also worked at the NOLA Sewing Machine Company making buttons and buttonholes for many years before moving to Pass Christian in 1952 with her son Herbert G. Roles to be near her relatives. She worked at the Holiday Inn of Long Beach raising to assistant housekeeper. Her hands were never idle.
Althea met Anthony (Tony) Johnson, who was working as a maintenance man at the Holiday Inn and were married on March 5, 1957, making their home on Seal Avenue. When her father became seriously ill, leaving him partially paralyzed and her mother blind, with Tony's blessings, Althea went to New Orleans to take care of her parents. After both parents died within six months of each other, Althea returned to her Pass Christian home. Althea has endured two major hurricanes and thankful that little house on
Seal avenue has remained to this day. One of her favorite stories to share with others was how much Popeye's chicken she ate after hurricane Katrina.
Althea had been a long time faithful member and supporter of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. She was an active member of the community by helping young families raise their children through her baby sitting and supporting many social organizations with financial donations. She enjoyed sewing, word puzzles, parties, and attending parades. She is preceded in death by her husband Anthony Johnson, son Herbert G. Roles, parents Andrew and Eve Rose Young, and her two sisters Yvonne Y. Anders and Margaret Y. Landry.Althea is survived by her four grandchildren Herbert Roles III and Andrew Roles of Gulfport, MS, Stephen Roles of Pass Christian, MS, Charmaine Daniels of Long Beach, MS, daughter-in-Law Rosemary Roles of Pass Christian, MS, nine Great grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews Dorothy Brown, Margaret Cameron, Gwendolyn, Edward, Willie, Philip, Clarence, and Constance Landry, and Charlene Brown Smith, who was like a daughter to her. In addition, to many extended family and friends that will
